Triumph TR7 Was a Futuristic Flop
When the Triumph “TR7” hit the streets in 1975, British Leyland called it “the shape of things to come.” Unfortunately, that shape was unreliable, slow, and constantly in need of repairs. It had a 1,998cc engine with 105 horsepower, which sounded sporty—until it overheated just thinking about going fast.
The electrical system was legendary—but not in a good way. Owners reported wiring failures, starter issues, and a general refusal to function on damp mornings. The “TR7” was built during British Leyland’s era of constant strikes, meaning poor assembly, mismatched body panels, and quality control nightmares. Some models left the factory rusting—before even touching the road.
