Suzuki Samurai: The SUV That Played Dead

Buying a tiny SUV should feel fun and adventurous, not like a game of “Will It Flip?” Yet, that’s precisely what the Suzuki “Samurai” delivered when it hit American roads in 1985. It looked cute, it was affordable, and it was surprisingly capable off-road. But there was one small problem: staying upright was not its strong suit.

With a narrow wheelbase and a high center of gravity, the “Samurai” was about as stable as a toddler learning to walk. In 1988, Consumer Reports called it “not acceptable” due to its habit of rolling over in sharp turns, and sales crashed faster than the car itself.
