Would You Drive These Disasters? The 45 Worst Cars of All Time

Trabant: Where 18 Horsepower Felt Like 8

In 1957, the East German government introduced the Trabant, a car so bad that owning one felt like a punishment. Designed to provide affordable transport under communist rule, it ended up being a symbol of frustration.

With a tiny 500cc two-stroke engine, the Trabant had a whopping 18 horsepower, which meant going from 0 to 60 miles per hour took about 21 seconds—if you even got there. The body wasn’t made of metal but duroplast, a plastic-like material reinforced with cotton waste. The wait time to own one? Up to 15 years. Yet somehow, it remains one of the most oddly beloved failures in automotive history.
