Dodge Royal: The King of Corrosion
The 1957 Dodge “Royal” was all about mid-century swagger, with tailfins sharp enough to slice bread and a 325 cubic inch V8 that sounded mean. But underneath all that style was a rust bucket waiting to happen. Dodge’s rush to mass-produce the car led to poor-quality steel and cheap paint, meaning many “Royal” models started rusting within a few years—sometimes straight from the dealership.
Then there was the push-button automatic transmission, which sounded futuristic but had a mind of its own, occasionally refusing to shift properly. The new “Torsion-Aire” suspension was meant to improve handling, but instead, it made the ride bouncy and unpredictable.
