Renault 10 Was Slow, Rusty and Forgotten

If Renault planned to beat the Volkswagen Beetle in the U.S., the 1967 Renault “10” had other ideas. It came with a tiny 1,108cc engine producing just 50 horsepower, meaning 0-60 miles per hour felt like a long-term goal rather than a real possibility.

The rear-engine layout gave it a weird, unbalanced feel, and the push-button automatic transmission was a mechanic’s nightmare—prone to failure and impossible to adjust properly. Then there was the rust. The “10” rusted faster than old bread. Combined with a weak dealer network, American buyers realized there were better ways to spend their money.
