Bursting through the back door, Mia shouted for her mother to come to the kitchen immediately. In her small, cupped hands, she proudly carried the creature, already thinking of names. Her mother’s reaction, however, was not what the curious child had hoped for. Upon seeing the dark, squirming animal, she let out a gasp and stepped back quickly, her face twisting with concern.
“That doesn’t look normal, Mia,” her mother warned, her eyes narrowing with suspicion. “Put it back outside where you found it and wash your hands.” But the little girl hugged the creature closer to her chest and shook her head stubbornly. “Her name is Lizzy.”
