Even though Lizzy had been taken away, Mia still thought of her often. In her mind, Lizzy remained the small, harmless creature she’d found in the dirt, not the venomous hybrid everyone feared. She kept a drawing of Lizzy taped above her bed, a small reminder of that strange summer.
Her new turtles, Speedy and Lizzy-2, comforted her. They were slow and predictable, everything Lizzy had not been. Mia realized now how lucky she had been. What started as innocent curiosity could have ended much worse, but they were lucky. Instead, it gave her two new friends and plenty of wisdom.
