The tension in the room skyrocketed. Dr. McDaniels reached quickly for a plastic enclosure and trapped Lizzy beneath it. His hands shook as he secured it with a stack of heavy books. Mia’s mother asked what was going on, but the vet was too distracted to answer. His focus remained locked on the squirming creature.
Without looking at them, he rolled his chair toward the computer and began typing furiously, pulling up page after page of information. Mia clung to her mother, confused and anxious. What could be so dangerous about the small animal she had found beneath a bush?
