Determined to get answers, Dr. McDaniels closed his practice for the afternoon and drove with Mia and her mother back to their home. Dressed now in casual clothes, he moved through the garden methodically, inspecting every inch of soil beneath the bushes. It had rained the night before, leaving the ground soft enough to reveal small tracks.
“ I’ve got something,” the vet finally said, crouching low. He traced faint lines that led beyond the garden’s fence. The child and her mother exchanged nervous glances. “What is beyond there?” he asked. Mia’s mother explained a nearby swampy forest, avoided by most neighbors.
